In 2009, the Jacksonville Jazz Society (JJS), formerly The Ritz Jazz Society, was formed by Na’im Rashid and Wayne Barlow. It is a volunteer organization of jazz enthusiasts, which includes professional jazz musicians, jazz scholars, jazz media professionals, jazz club and performance site owners and managers.  The core of JJS is composed of non-professionals who LOVE jazz and are dedicated to the preservation, promotion, and presentation of traditional and contemporary jazz music. The organization was originally created to present, promote, and preserve Jazz and Jazz education in Jacksonville, Florida, and beyond. We support live events, broadcasts, and collaborate with various other jazz and educational organizations in our commitment to support the current and future generation of jazz musicians and enthusiasts.

“The Jacksonville Jazz Society is organized for continuing the education of the community regarding jazz music, preserving the history of jazz music, specifically with regard to jazz music in Jacksonville, Florida, and continuing to spread the knowledge of jazz music and events both locally and regionally.”

The JJS currently holds meetings on the 2nd Saturday of each month at 12 noon at The Ritz Theatre in downtown Jacksonville.  The meetings are open to both members and guests alike.

Did you know…

  • Swing Jazz is considered to be popular dance music which is played from printed musical arrangements.
  • Bebop Jazz focuses more on small groups and simple arrangements played solo or in small groups.
  • Jazz originated in predominantly black communities in the southern United States.
  • Jazz was born out of a mix of African and European music traditions. Its West African pedigree is evident in its use of blue notes, improvisation, polyrhytms, syncopation and the swing note.
  • From its early development until the present day jazz has also incorporated music from American popular music.
